Thus saith the LORD, The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool: where is the house that ye build unto me? and where is the place of my rest? For all those things hath mine hand made, and all those things have been, saith the LORD: but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word. [Isaiah 66: 1-2]

    Exodus 32

  • 1. When the people saw that Moses was so long in coming down from the mountain, they gathered around Aaron and said, "Come, make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who brought us up out of Egypt, we don't know what has happened to him."
  • 2. Aaron answered them, "Take off the gold earrings that your wives, your sons and your daughters are wearing, and bring them to me."
  • 3. So all the people took off their earrings and brought them to Aaron.
  • 4. He took what they handed him and made it into an idol cast in the shape of a calf, fashioning it with a tool. Then they said, "These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt."
  • 5. When Aaron saw this, he built an altar in front of the calf and announced, "Tomorrow there will be a festival to the LORD."
  • 6. So the next day the people rose early and sacrificed burnt offerings and presented fellowship offerings. Afterward they sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in revelry.
  • 7. Then the LORD said to Moses, "Go down, because your people, whom you brought up out of Egypt, have become corrupt.
  • 8. They have been quick to turn away from what I commanded them and have made themselves an idol cast in the shape of a calf. They have bowed down to it and sacrificed to it and have said, 'These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.'
  • 9. "I have seen these people," the LORD said to Moses, "and they are a stiff-necked people.
  • 10. Now leave me alone so that my anger may burn against them and that I may destroy them. Then I will make you into a great nation."
  • 11. But Moses sought the favor of the LORD his God. "O LORD," he said, "why should your anger burn against your people, whom you brought out of Egypt with great power and a mighty hand?
  • 12. Why should the Egyptians say, 'It was with evil intent that he brought them out, to kill them in the mountains and to wipe them off the face of the earth'? Turn from your fierce anger; relent and do not bring disaster on your people.
  • 13. Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac and Israel, to whom you swore by your own self: 'I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and I will give your descendants all this land I promised them, and it will be their inheritance forever.'"
  • 14. Then the LORD relented and did not bring on his people the disaster he had threatened.
  • 15. Moses turned and went down the mountain with the two tablets of the Testimony in his hands. They were inscribed on both sides, front and back.
  • 16. The tablets were the work of God; the writing was the writing of God, engraved on the tablets.
  • 17. When Joshua heard the noise of the people shouting, he said to Moses, "There is the sound of war in the camp."
  • 18. Moses replied: "It is not the sound of victory, it is not the sound of defeat; it is the sound of singing that I hear."
  • 19. When Moses approached the camp and saw the calf and the dancing, his anger burned and he threw the tablets out of his hands, breaking them to pieces at the foot of the mountain.
  • 20. And he took the calf they had made and burned it in the fire; then he ground it to powder, scattered it on the water and made the Israelites drink it.
  • 21. He said to Aaron, "What did these people do to you, that you led them into such great sin?"
  • 22. "Do not be angry, my lord," Aaron answered. "You know how prone these people are to evil.
  • 23. They said to me, 'Make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who brought us up out of Egypt, we don't know what has happened to him.'
  • 24. So I told them, 'Whoever has any gold jewelry, take it off.' Then they gave me the gold, and I threw it into the fire, and out came this calf!"
  • 25. Moses saw that the people were running wild and that Aaron had let them get out of control and so become a laughingstock to their enemies.
  • 26. So he stood at the entrance to the camp and said, "Whoever is for the LORD, come to me." And all the Levites rallied to him.
  • 27. Then he said to them, "This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: 'Each man strap a sword to his side. Go back and forth through the camp from one end to the other, each killing his brother and friend and neighbor.'"
  • 28. The Levites did as Moses commanded, and that day about three thousand of the people died.
  • 29. Then Moses said, "You have been set apart to the LORD today, for you were against your own sons and brothers, and he has blessed you this day."
  • 30. The next day Moses said to the people, "You have committed a great sin. But now I will go up to the LORD; perhaps I can make atonement for your sin."
  • 31. So Moses went back to the LORD and said, "Oh, what a great sin these people have committed! They have made themselves gods of gold.
  • 32. But now, please forgive their sin-but if not, then blot me out of the book you have written."
  • 33. The LORD replied to Moses, "Whoever has sinned against me I will blot out of my book.
  • 34. Now go, lead the people to the place I spoke of, and my angel will go before you. However, when the time comes for me to punish, I will punish them for their sin."
  • 35. And the LORD struck the people with a plague because of what they did with the calf Aaron had made.
  • John 12

  • 1. Six days before the Passover, Jesus arrived at Bethany, where Lazarus lived, whom Jesus had raised from the dead.
  • 2. Here a dinner was given in Jesus' honor. Martha served, while Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with him.
  • 3. Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus' feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.
  • 4. But one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was later to betray him, objected,
  • 5. "Why wasn't this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? It was worth a year's wages. "
  • 6. He did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was put into it.
  • 7. "Leave her alone," Jesus replied. "It was intended that she should save this perfume for the day of my burial.
  • 8. You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me."
  • 9. Meanwhile a large crowd of Jews found out that Jesus was there and came, not only because of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead.
  • 10. So the chief priests made plans to kill Lazarus as well,
  • 11. for on account of him many of the Jews were going over to Jesus and putting their faith in him.
  • 12. The next day the great crowd that had come for the Feast heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem.
  • 13. They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, "Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!Blessed is the King of Israel!"
  • 14. Jesus found a young donkey and sat upon it, as it is written,
  • 15. "Do not be afraid, O Daughter of Zion; see, your king is coming, seated on a donkey's colt."
  • 16. At first his disciples did not understand all this. Only after Jesus was glorified did they realize that these things had been written about him and that they had done these things to him.
  • 17. Now the crowd that was with him when he called Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to spread the word.
  • 18. Many people, because they had heard that he had given this miraculous sign, went out to meet him.
  • 19. So the Pharisees said to one another, "See, this is getting us nowhere. Look how the whole world has gone after him!"
  • 20. Now there were some Greeks among those who went up to worship at the Feast.
  • 21. They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, with a request. "Sir," they said, "we would like to see Jesus."
  • 22. Philip went to tell Andrew; Andrew and Philip in turn told Jesus.
  • 23. Jesus replied, "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.
  • 24. I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds.
  • 25. The man who loves his life will lose it, while the man who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.
  • 26. Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me.
  • 27. "Now my heart is troubled, and what shall I say? 'Father, save me from this hour'? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour.
  • 28. Father, glorify your name!"
  • 29. Then a voice came from heaven, "I have glorified it, and will glorify it again." The crowd that was there and heard it said it had thundered; others said an angel had spoken to him.
  • 30. Jesus said, "This voice was for your benefit, not mine.
  • 31. Now is the time for judgment on this world; now the prince of this world will be driven out.
  • 32. But I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to myself."
  • 33. He said this to show the kind of death he was going to die.
  • 34. The crowd spoke up, "We have heard from the Law that the Christ will remain forever, so how can you say, 'The Son of Man must be lifted up'? Who is this 'Son of Man'?"
  • 35. Then Jesus told them, "You are going to have the light just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, before darkness overtakes you. The man who walks in the dark does not know where he is going.
  • 36. Put your trust in the light while you have it, so that you may become sons of light." When he had finished speaking, Jesus left and hid himself from them.
  • 37. Even after Jesus had done all these miraculous signs in their presence, they still would not believe in him.
  • 38. This was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet: "Lord, who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?"
  • 39. For this reason they could not believe, because, as Isaiah says elsewhere:
  • 40. "He has blinded their eyes and deadened their hearts, so they can neither see with their eyes, nor understand with their hearts, nor turn--and I would heal them."
  • 41. Isaiah said this because he saw Jesus' glory and spoke about him.
  • 42. Yet at the same time many even among the leaders believed in him. But because of the Pharisees they would not confess their faith for fear they would be put out of the synagogue;
  • 43. for they loved praise from men more than praise from God.
  • 44. Then Jesus cried out, "When a man believes in me, he does not believe in me only, but in the one who sent me.
  • 45. When he looks at me, he sees the one who sent me.
  • 46. I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.
  • 47. "As for the person who hears my words but does not keep them, I do not judge him. For I did not come to judge the world, but to save it.
  • 48. There is a judge for the one who rejects me and does not accept my words; that very word which I spoke will condemn him at the last day.
  • 49. For I did not speak of my own accord, but the Father who sent me commanded me what to say and how to say it.
  • 50. I know that his command leads to eternal life. So whatever I say is just what the Father has told me to say."
  • Proverbs 9

  • 10. "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.

  • 16. "Let all who are simple come in here!" she says to those who lack judgment.
  • 17. "Stolen water is sweet; food eaten in secret is delicious!"
