Thus saith the LORD, The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool: where is the house that ye build unto me? and where is the place of my rest? For all those things hath mine hand made, and all those things have been, saith the LORD: but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word. [Isaiah 66: 1-2]

    Genesis 40

  • 1. Some time later, the cupbearer and the baker of the king of Egypt offended their master, the king of Egypt.
  • 2. Pharaoh was angry with his two officials, the chief cupbearer and the chief baker,
  • 3. and put them in custody in the house of the captain of the guard, in the same prison where Joseph was confined.
  • 4. The captain of the guard assigned them to Joseph, and he attended them. After they had been in custody for some time,
  • 5. each of the two men-the cupbearer and the baker of the king of Egypt, who were being held in prison-had a dream the same night, and each dream had a meaning of its own.
  • 6. When Joseph came to them the next morning, he saw that they were dejected.
  • 7. So he asked Pharaoh's officials who were in custody with him in his master's house, "Why are your faces so sad today?"
  • 8. "We both had dreams," they answered, "but there is no one to interpret them." Then Joseph said to them, "Do not interpretations belong to God? Tell me your dreams."
  • 9. So the chief cupbearer told Joseph his dream. He said to him, "In my dream I saw a vine in front of me,
  • 10. and on the vine were three branches. As soon as it budded, it blossomed, and its clusters ripened into grapes.
  • 11. Pharaoh's cup was in my hand, and I took the grapes, squeezed them into Pharaoh's cup and put the cup in his hand."
  • 12. "This is what it means," Joseph said to him. "The three branches are three days.
  • 13. Within three days Pharaoh will lift up your head and restore you to your position, and you will put Pharaoh's cup in his hand, just as you used to do when you were his cupbearer.
  • 14. But when all goes well with you, remember me and show me kindness; mention me to Pharaoh and get me out of this prison.
  • 15. For I was forcibly carried off from the land of the Hebrews, and even here I have done nothing to deserve being put in a dungeon."
  • 16. When the chief baker saw that Joseph had given a favorable interpretation, he said to Joseph, "I too had a dream: On my head were three baskets of bread.
  • 17. In the top basket were all kinds of baked goods for Pharaoh, but the birds were eating them out of the basket on my head."
  • 18. "This is what it means," Joseph said. "The three baskets are three days.
  • 19. Within three days Pharaoh will lift off your head and hang you on a tree. And the birds will eat away your flesh."
  • 20. Now the third day was Pharaoh's birthday, and he gave a feast for all his officials. He lifted up the heads of the chief cupbearer and the chief baker in the presence of his officials:
  • 21. He restored the chief cupbearer to his position, so that he once again put the cup into Pharaoh's hand,
  • 22. but he hanged the chief baker, just as Joseph had said to them in his interpretation.
  • 23. The chief cupbearer, however, did not remember Joseph; he forgot him.
  • Mark 11

  • 1. As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples,
  • 2. saying to them, "Go to the village ahead of you, and just as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here.
  • 3. If anyone asks you, 'Why are you doing this?' tell him, 'The Lord needs it and will send it back here shortly.'"
  • 4. They went and found a colt outside in the street, tied at a doorway. As they untied it,
  • 5. some people standing there asked, "What are you doing, untying that colt?"
  • 6. They answered as Jesus had told them to, and the people let them go.
  • 7. When they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks over it, he sat on it.
  • 8. Many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others spread branches they had cut in the fields.
  • 9. Those who went ahead and those who followed shouted, "Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!"
  • 10. "Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!Hosanna in the highest!"
  • 11. Jesus entered Jerusalem and went to the temple. He looked around at everything, but since it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the Twelve.
  • 12. The next day as they were leaving Bethany, Jesus was hungry.
  • 13. Seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to find out if it had any fruit. When he reached it, he found nothing but leaves, because it was not the season for figs.
  • 14. Then he said to the tree, "May no one ever eat fruit from you again." And his disciples heard him say it.
  • 15. On reaching Jerusalem, Jesus entered the temple area and began driving out those who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves,
  • 16. and would not allow anyone to carry merchandise through the temple courts.
  • 17. And as he taught them, he said, "Is it not written: "'My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations'? But you have made it 'a den of robbers.'"
  • 18. The chief priests and the teachers of the law heard this and began looking for a way to kill him, for they feared him, because the whole crowd was amazed at his teaching.
  • 19. When evening came, they went out of the city.
  • 20. In the morning, as they went along, they saw the fig tree withered from the roots.
  • 21. Peter remembered and said to Jesus, "Rabbi, look! The fig tree you cursed has withered!"
  • 22. "Have faith in God," Jesus answered.
  • 23. "I tell you the truth, if anyone says to this mountain, 'Go, throw yourself into the sea,' and does not doubt in his heart but believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him.
  • 24. Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.
  • 25. And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins."
  • 26. See Footnote
  • 27. They arrived again in Jerusalem, and while Jesus was walking in the temple courts, the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders came to him.
  • 28. "By what authority are you doing these things?" they asked. "And who gave you authority to do this?"
  • 29. Jesus replied, "I will ask you one question. Answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things.
  • 30. John's baptism--was it from heaven, or from men? Tell me!"
  • 31. They discussed it among themselves and said, "If we say, 'From heaven,' he will ask, 'Then why didn't you believe him?'
  • 32. But if we say, 'From men'...." (They feared the people, for everyone held that John really was a prophet.)
  • 33. So they answered Jesus, "We don't know." Jesus said, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things."
  • Job 7

  • 1. "Does not man have hard service on earth? Are not his days like those of a hired man?
  • 2. Like a slave longing for the evening shadows, or a hired man waiting eagerly for his wages,
  • 3. so I have been allotted months of futility, and nights of misery have been assigned to me.
  • 4. When I lie down I think, 'How long before I get up?' The night drags on, and I toss till dawn.
  • 5. My body is clothed with worms and scabs, my skin is broken and festering.
  • 6. "My days are swifter than a weaver's shuttle, and they come to an end without hope.
  • 7. Remember, O God, that my life is but a breath; my eyes will never see happiness again.
  • 8. The eye that now sees me will see me no longer; you will look for me, but I will be no more.
  • 9. As a cloud vanishes and is gone, so he who goes down to the grave does not return.
  • 10. He will never come to his house again; his place will know him no more.
  • 11. "Therefore I will not keep silent; I will speak out in the anguish of my spirit, I will complain in the bitterness of my soul.
  • 12. Am I the sea, or the monster of the deep, that you put me under guard?
  • 13. When I think my bed will comfort me and my couch will ease my complaint,
  • 14. even then you frighten me with dreams and terrify me with visions,
  • 15. so that I prefer strangling and death, rather than this body of mine.
  • 16. I despise my life; I would not live forever. Let me alone; my days have no meaning.
  • 17. "What is man that you make so much of him, that you give him so much attention,
  • 18. that you examine him every morning and test him every moment?
  • 19. Will you never look away from me, or let me alone even for an instant?
  • 20. If I have sinned, what have I done to you, O watcher of men? Why have you made me your target? Have I become a burden to you?
  • 21. Why do you not pardon my offenses and forgive my sins? For I will soon lie down in the dust; you will search for me, but I will be no more."
