Thus saith the LORD, The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool: where is the house that ye build unto me? and where is the place of my rest? For all those things hath mine hand made, and all those things have been, saith the LORD: but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word. [Isaiah 66: 1-2]

    Genesis 39

  • 1. Now Joseph had been taken down to Egypt. Potiphar, an Egyptian who was one of Pharaoh's officials, the captain of the guard, bought him from the Ishmaelites who had taken him there.
  • 2. The LORD was with Joseph and he prospered, and he lived in the house of his Egyptian master.
  • 3. When his master saw that the LORD was with him and that the LORD gave him success in everything he did,
  • 4. Joseph found favor in his eyes and became his attendant. Potiphar put him in charge of his household, and he entrusted to his care everything he owned.
  • 5. From the time he put him in charge of his household and of all that he owned, the LORD blessed the household of the Egyptian because of Joseph. The blessing of the LORD was on everything Potiphar had, both in the house and in the field.
  • 6. So he left in Joseph's care everything he had; with Joseph in charge, he did not concern himself with anything except the food he ate. Now Joseph was well-built and handsome,
  • 7. and after a while his master's wife took notice of Joseph and said, "Come to bed with me!"
  • 8. But he refused. "With me in charge," he told her, "my master does not concern himself with anything in the house; everything he owns he has entrusted to my care.
  • 9. No one is greater in this house than I am. My master has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?"
  • 10. And though she spoke to Joseph day after day, he refused to go to bed with her or even be with her.
  • 11. One day he went into the house to attend to his duties, and none of the household servants was inside.
  • 12. She caught him by his cloak and said, "Come to bed with me!" But he left his cloak in her hand and ran out of the house.
  • 13. When she saw that he had left his cloak in her hand and had run out of the house,
  • 14. she called her household servants. "Look," she said to them, "this Hebrew has been brought to us to make sport of us! He came in here to sleep with me, but I screamed.
  • 15. When he heard me scream for help, he left his cloak beside me and ran out of the house."
  • 16. She kept his cloak beside her until his master came home.
  • 17. Then she told him this story: "That Hebrew slave you brought us came to me to make sport of me.
  • 18. But as soon as I screamed for help, he left his cloak beside me and ran out of the house."
  • 19. When his master heard the story his wife told him, saying, "This is how your slave treated me," he burned with anger.
  • 20. Joseph's master took him and put him in prison, the place where the king's prisoners were confined. But while Joseph was there in the prison,
  • 21. the LORD was with him; he showed him kindness and granted him favor in the eyes of the prison warden.
  • 22. So the warden put Joseph in charge of all those held in the prison, and he was made responsible for all that was done there.
  • 23. The warden paid no attention to anything under Joseph's care, because the LORD was with Joseph and gave him success in whatever he did.
  • Mark 10

  • 1. Jesus then left that place and went into the region of Judea and across the Jordan. Again crowds of people came to him, and as was his custom, he taught them.
  • 2. Some Pharisees came and tested him by asking, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?"
  • 3. "What did Moses command you?" he replied.
  • 4. They said, "Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce and send her away."
  • 5. "It was because your hearts were hard that Moses wrote you this law," Jesus replied.
  • 6. "But at the beginning of creation God 'made them male and female.'
  • 7. 'For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife,
  • 8. and the two will become one flesh.' So they are no longer two, but one.
  • 9. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate."
  • 10. When they were in the house again, the disciples asked Jesus about this.
  • 11. He answered, "Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her.
  • 12. And if she divorces her husband and marries another man, she commits adultery."
  • 13. People were bringing little children to Jesus to have him touch them, but the disciples rebuked them.
  • 14. When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.
  • 15. I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it."
  • 16. And he took the children in his arms, put his hands on them and blessed them.
  • 17. As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him. "Good teacher," he asked, "what must I do to inherit eternal life?"
  • 18. "Why do you call me good?" Jesus answered. "No one is good--except God alone.
  • 19. You know the commandments: 'Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony, do not defraud, honor your father and mother.'"
  • 20. "Teacher," he declared, "all these I have kept since I was a boy."
  • 21. Jesus looked at him and loved him. "One thing you lack," he said. "Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."
  • 22. At this the man's face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth.
  • 23. Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, "How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!"
  • 24. The disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said again, "Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God!
  • 25. It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."
  • 26. The disciples were even more amazed, and said to each other, "Who then can be saved?"
  • 27. Jesus looked at them and said, "With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God."
  • 28. Peter said to him, "We have left everything to follow you!"
  • 29. "I tell you the truth," Jesus replied, "no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for me and the gospel
  • 30. will fail to receive a hundred times as much in this present age (homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and fields--and with them, persecutions) and in the age to come, eternal life.
  • 31. But many who are first will be last, and the last first."
  • 32. They were on their way up to Jerusalem, with Jesus leading the way, and the disciples were astonished, while those who followed were afraid. Again he took the Twelve aside and told them what was going to happen to him.
  • 33. "We are going up to Jerusalem," he said, "and the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death and will hand him over to the Gentiles,
  • 34. who will mock him and spit on him, flog him and kill him. Three days later he will rise."
  • 35. Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him. "Teacher," they said, "we want you to do for us whatever we ask."
  • 36. "What do you want me to do for you?" he asked.
  • 37. They replied, "Let one of us sit at your right and the other at your left in your glory."
  • 38. "You don't know what you are asking," Jesus said. "Can you drink the cup I drink or be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with?"
  • 39. "We can," they answered. Jesus said to them, "You will drink the cup I drink and be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with,
  • 40. but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared."
  • 41. When the ten heard about this, they became indignant with James and John.
  • 42. Jesus called them together and said, "You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them.
  • 43. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant,
  • 44. and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all.
  • 45. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."
  • 46. Then they came to Jericho. As Jesus and his disciples, together with a large crowd, were leaving the city, a blind man, Bartimaeus (that is, the Son of Timaeus), was sitting by the roadside begging.
  • 47. When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!"
  • 48. Many rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, "Son of David, have mercy on me!"
  • 49. Jesus stopped and said, "Call him." So they called to the blind man, "Cheer up! On your feet! He's calling you."
  • 50. Throwing his cloak aside, he jumped to his feet and came to Jesus.
  • 51. "What do you want me to do for you?" Jesus asked him. The blind man said, "Rabbi, I want to see."
  • 52. "Go," said Jesus, "your faith has healed you." Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus along the road.
  • Job 6

  • 1. Then Job replied:
  • 2. "If only my anguish could be weighed and all my misery be placed on the scales!
  • 3. It would surely outweigh the sand of the seas- no wonder my words have been impetuous.
  • 4. The arrows of the Almighty are in me, my spirit drinks in their poison; God's terrors are marshaled against me.
  • 5. Does a wild donkey bray when it has grass, or an ox bellow when it has fodder?
  • 6. Is tasteless food eaten without salt, or is there flavor in the white of an egg?
  • 7. I refuse to touch it; such food makes me ill.
  • 8. "Oh, that I might have my request, that God would grant what I hope for,
  • 9. that God would be willing to crush me, to let loose his hand and cut me off!
  • 10. Then I would still have this consolation- my joy in unrelenting pain- that I had not denied the words of the Holy One.
  • 11. "What strength do I have, that I should still hope? What prospects, that I should be patient?
  • 12. Do I have the strength of stone? Is my flesh bronze?
  • 13. Do I have any power to help myself, now that success has been driven from me?
  • 14. "A despairing man should have the devotion of his friends, even though he forsakes the fear of the Almighty.
  • 15. But my brothers are as undependable as intermittent streams, as the streams that overflow
  • 16. when darkened by thawing ice and swollen with melting snow,
  • 17. but that cease to flow in the dry season, and in the heat vanish from their channels.
  • 18. Caravans turn aside from their routes; they go up into the wasteland and perish.
  • 19. The caravans of Tema look for water, the traveling merchants of Sheba look in hope.
  • 20. They are distressed, because they had been confident; they arrive there, only to be disappointed.
  • 21. Now you too have proved to be of no help; you see something dreadful and are afraid.
  • 22. Have I ever said, 'Give something on my behalf, pay a ransom for me from your wealth,
  • 23. deliver me from the hand of the enemy, ransom me from the clutches of the ruthless'?
  • 24. "Teach me, and I will be quiet; show me where I have been wrong.
  • 25. How painful are honest words! But what do your arguments prove?
  • 26. Do you mean to correct what I say, and treat the words of a despairing man as wind?
  • 27. You would even cast lots for the fatherless and barter away your friend.
  • 28. "But now be so kind as to look at me. Would I lie to your face?
  • 29. Relent, do not be unjust; reconsider, for my integrity is at stake.
  • 30. Is there any wickedness on my lips? Can my mouth not discern malice?
