Thus saith the LORD, The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool: where is the house that ye build unto me? and where is the place of my rest? For all those things hath mine hand made, and all those things have been, saith the LORD: but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word. [Isaiah 66: 1-2]

    Exodus 21

  • 1. "These are the laws you are to set before them:
  • 2. "If you buy a Hebrew servant, he is to serve you for six years. But in the seventh year, he shall go free, without paying anything.
  • 3. If he comes alone, he is to go free alone; but if he has a wife when he comes, she is to go with him.
  • 4. If his master gives him a wife and she bears him sons or daughters, the woman and her children shall belong to her master, and only the man shall go free.
  • 5. "But if the servant declares, 'I love my master and my wife and children and do not want to go free,'
  • 6. then his master must take him before the judges. He shall take him to the door or the doorpost and pierce his ear with an awl. Then he will be his servant for life.
  • 7. "If a man sells his daughter as a servant, she is not to go free as menservants do.
  • 8. If she does not please the master who has selected her for himself, he must let her be redeemed. He has no right to sell her to foreigners, because he has broken faith with her.
  • 9. If he selects her for his son, he must grant her the rights of a daughter.
  • 10. If he marries another woman, he must not deprive the first one of her food, clothing and marital rights.
  • 11. If he does not provide her with these three things, she is to go free, without any payment of money.
  • 12. "Anyone who strikes a man and kills him shall surely be put to death.
  • 13. However, if he does not do it intentionally, but God lets it happen, he is to flee to a place I will designate.
  • 14. But if a man schemes and kills another man deliberately, take him away from my altar and put him to death.
  • 15. "Anyone who attacks his father or his mother must be put to death.
  • 16. "Anyone who kidnaps another and either sells him or still has him when he is caught must be put to death.
  • 17. "Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.
  • 18. "If men quarrel and one hits the other with a stone or with his fist and he does not die but is confined to bed,
  • 19. the one who struck the blow will not be held responsible if the other gets up and walks around outside with his staff; however, he must pay the injured man for the loss of his time and see that he is completely healed.
  • 20. "If a man beats his male or female slave with a rod and the slave dies as a direct result, he must be punished,
  • 21. but he is not to be punished if the slave gets up after a day or two, since the slave is his property.
  • 22. "If men who are fighting hit a pregnant woman and she gives birth prematurely but there is no serious injury, the offender must be fined whatever the woman's husband demands and the court allows.
  • 23. But if there is serious injury, you are to take life for life,
  • 24. eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot,
  • 25. burn for burn, wound for wound, bruise for bruise.
  • 26. "If a man hits a manservant or maidservant in the eye and destroys it, he must let the servant go free to compensate for the eye.
  • 27. And if he knocks out the tooth of a manservant or maidservant, he must let the servant go free to compensate for the tooth.
  • 28. "If a bull gores a man or a woman to death, the bull must be stoned to death, and its meat must not be eaten. But the owner of the bull will not be held responsible.
  • 29. If, however, the bull has had the habit of goring and the owner has been warned but has not kept it penned up and it kills a man or woman, the bull must be stoned and the owner also must be put to death.
  • 30. However, if payment is demanded of him, he may redeem his life by paying whatever is demanded.
  • 31. This law also applies if the bull gores a son or daughter.
  • 32. If the bull gores a male or female slave, the owner must pay thirty shekels of silver to the master of the slave, and the bull must be stoned.
  • 33. "If a man uncovers a pit or digs one and fails to cover it and an ox or a donkey falls into it,
  • 34. the owner of the pit must pay for the loss; he must pay its owner, and the dead animal will be his.
  • 35. "If a man's bull injures the bull of another and it dies, they are to sell the live one and divide both the money and the dead animal equally.
  • 36. However, if it was known that the bull had the habit of goring, yet the owner did not keep it penned up, the owner must pay, animal for animal, and the dead animal will be his.
  • John 1

  • 1. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
  • 2. He was with God in the beginning.
  • 3. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.
  • 4. In him was life, and that life was the light of men.
  • 5. The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.
  • 6. There came a man who was sent from God; his name was John.
  • 7. He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all men might believe.
  • 8. He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.
  • 9. The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world.
  • 10. He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him.
  • 11. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.
  • 12. Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God--
  • 13. children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God.
  • 14. The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
  • 15. John testifies concerning him. He cries out, saying, "This was he of whom I said, 'He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.'"
  • 16. From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing after another.
  • 17. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
  • 18. No one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only,, who is at the Father's side, has made him known.
  • 19. Now this was John's testimony when the Jews of Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was.
  • 20. He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, "I am not the Christ. "
  • 21. They asked him, "Then who are you? Are you Elijah?" He said, "I am not.Are you the Prophet?" He answered, "No."
  • 22. Finally they said, "Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?"
  • 23. John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, "I am the voice of one calling in the desert, 'Make straight the way for the Lord.'"
  • 24. Now some Pharisees who had been sent
  • 25. questioned him, "Why then do you baptize if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?"
  • 26. "I baptize with water," John replied, "but among you stands one you do not know.
  • 27. He is the one who comes after me, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie."
  • 28. This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
  • 29. The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
  • 30. This is the one I meant when I said, 'A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.'
  • 31. I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel."
  • 32. Then John gave this testimony: "I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him.
  • 33. I would not have known him, except that the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, 'The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is he who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.'
  • 34. I have seen and I testify that this is the Son of God."
  • 35. The next day John was there again with two of his disciples.
  • 36. When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, "Look, the Lamb of God!"
  • 37. When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus.
  • 38. Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, "What do you want?" They said, "Rabbi" (which means Teacher), "where are you staying?"
  • 39. "Come," he replied, "and you will see." So they went and saw where he was staying, and spent that day with him. It was about the tenth hour.
  • 40. Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus.
  • 41. The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, "We have found the Messiah" (that is, the Christ).
  • 42. And he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, "You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas" (which, when translated, is Peter ).
  • 43. The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, he said to him, "Follow me."
  • 44. Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida.
  • 45. Philip found Nathanael and told him, "We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote--Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph."
  • 46. "Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?" Nathanael asked. "Come and see," said Philip.
  • 47. When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, "Here is a true Israelite, in whom there is nothing false."
  • 48. "How do you know me?" Nathanael asked. Jesus answered, "I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you."
  • 49. Then Nathanael declared, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel."
  • 50. Jesus said, "You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You shall see greater things than that."
  • 51. He then added, "I tell you the truth, you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man."
  • Job 40

  • 1. The LORD said to Job:
  • 2. "Will the one who contends with the Almighty correct him? Let him who accuses God answer him!"
  • 3. Then Job answered the LORD:
  • 4. "I am unworthy-how can I reply to you? I put my hand over my mouth.
  • 5. I spoke once, but I have no answer- twice, but I will say no more."
  • 6. Then the LORD spoke to Job out of the storm:
  • 7. "Brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer me.
  • 8. "Would you discredit my justice? Would you condemn me to justify yourself?
  • 9. Do you have an arm like God's, and can your voice thunder like his?
  • 10. Then adorn yourself with glory and splendor, and clothe yourself in honor and majesty.
  • 11. Unleash the fury of your wrath, look at every proud man and bring him low,
  • 12. look at every proud man and humble him, crush the wicked where they stand.
  • 13. Bury them all in the dust together; shroud their faces in the grave.
  • 14. Then I myself will admit to you that your own right hand can save you.
  • 15. "Look at the behemoth, which I made along with you and which feeds on grass like an ox.
  • 16. What strength he has in his loins, what power in the muscles of his belly!
  • 17. His tail sways like a cedar; the sinews of his thighs are close-knit.
  • 18. His bones are tubes of bronze, his limbs like rods of iron.
  • 19. He ranks first among the works of God, yet his Maker can approach him with his sword.
  • 20. The hills bring him their produce, and all the wild animals play nearby.
  • 21. Under the lotus plants he lies, hidden among the reeds in the marsh.
  • 22. The lotuses conceal him in their shadow; the poplars by the stream surround him.
  • 23. When the river rages, he is not alarmed; he is secure, though the Jordan should surge against his mouth.
  • 24. Can anyone capture him by the eyes, or trap him and pierce his nose?
