Thus saith the LORD, The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool: where is the house that ye build unto me? and where is the place of my rest? For all those things hath mine hand made, and all those things have been, saith the LORD: but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word. [Isaiah 66: 1-2]

    Exodus 20

  • 1. And God spoke all these words:
  • 2. "I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.
  • 3. "You shall have no other gods before me.
  • 4. "You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below.
  • 5. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me,
  • 6. but showing love to a thousand {generations} of those who love me and keep my commandments.
  • 7. "You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.
  • 8. "Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.
  • 9. Six days you shall labor and do all your work,
  • 10. but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your animals, nor the alien within your gates.
  • 11. For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.
  • 12. "Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you.
  • 13. "You shall not murder.
  • 14. "You shall not commit adultery.
  • 15. "You shall not steal.
  • 16. "You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.
  • 17. "You shall not covet your neighbor's house. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor."
  • 18. When the people saw the thunder and lightning and heard the trumpet and saw the mountain in smoke, they trembled with fear. They stayed at a distance
  • 19. and said to Moses, "Speak to us yourself and we will listen. But do not have God speak to us or we will die."
  • 20. Moses said to the people, "Do not be afraid. God has come to test you, so that the fear of God will be with you to keep you from sinning."
  • 21. The people remained at a distance, while Moses approached the thick darkness where God was.
  • 22. Then the LORD said to Moses, "Tell the Israelites this: 'You have seen for yourselves that I have spoken to you from heaven:
  • 23. Do not make any gods to be alongside me; do not make for yourselves gods of silver or gods of gold.
  • 24. "'Make an altar of earth for me and sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and fellowship offerings, your sheep and goats and your cattle. Wherever I cause my name to be honored, I will come to you and bless you.
  • 25. If you make an altar of stones for me, do not build it with dressed stones, for you will defile it if you use a tool on it.
  • 26. And do not go up to my altar on steps, lest your nakedness be exposed on it.'
  • Luke 24

  • 1. On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb.
  • 2. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb,
  • 3. but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.
  • 4. While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them.
  • 5. In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, "Why do you look for the living among the dead?
  • 6. He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee:
  • 7. 'The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.'"
  • 8. Then they remembered his words.
  • 9. When they came back from the tomb, they told all these things to the Eleven and to all the others.
  • 10. It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the others with them who told this to the apostles.
  • 11. But they did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense.
  • 12. Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. Bending over, he saw the strips of linen lying by themselves, and he went away, wondering to himself what had happened.
  • 13. Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem.
  • 14. They were talking with each other about everything that had happened.
  • 15. As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them;
  • 16. but they were kept from recognizing him.
  • 17. He asked them, "What are you discussing together as you walk along?"
  • 18. They stood still, their faces downcast. One of them, named Cleopas, asked him, "Are you only a visitor to Jerusalem and do not know the things that have happened there in these days?"
  • 19. "What things?" he asked.
  • 20. "About Jesus of Nazareth," they replied. "He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him;
  • 21. but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And what is more, it is the third day since all this took place.
  • 22. In addition, some of our women amazed us. They went to the tomb early this morning
  • 23. but didn't find his body. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive.
  • 24. Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but him they did not see."
  • 25. He said to them, "How foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken!
  • 26. Did not the Christ have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?"
  • 27. And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.
  • 28. As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus acted as if he were going farther.
  • 29. But they urged him strongly, "Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over." So he went in to stay with them.
  • 30. When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them.
  • 31. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight.
  • 32. They asked each other, "Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?"
  • 33. They got up and returned at once to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven and those with them, assembled together
  • 34. and saying, "It is true! The Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon."
  • 35. Then the two told what had happened on the way, and how Jesus was recognized by them when he broke the bread.
  • 36. While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, "Peace be with you."
  • 37. They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost.
  • 38. He said to them, "Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds?
  • 39. Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have."
  • 40. When he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet.
  • 41. And while they still did not believe it because of joy and amazement, he asked them, "Do you have anything here to eat?"
  • 42. They gave him a piece of broiled fish,
  • 43. and he took it and ate it in their presence.
  • 44. He said to them, "This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms."
  • 45. Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures.
  • 46. He told them, "This is what is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day,
  • 47. and repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
  • 48. You are witnesses of these things.
  • 49. I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high."
  • 50. When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he lifted up his hands and blessed them.
  • 51. While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven.
  • 52. Then they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy.
  • 53. And they stayed continually at the temple, praising God.
  • Job 39

  • 1. "Do you know when the mountain goats give birth? Do you watch when the doe bears her fawn?
  • 2. Do you count the months till they bear? Do you know the time they give birth?
  • 3. They crouch down and bring forth their young; their labor pains are ended.
  • 4. Their young thrive and grow strong in the wilds; they leave and do not return.
  • 5. "Who let the wild donkey go free? Who untied his ropes?
  • 6. I gave him the wasteland as his home, the salt flats as his habitat.
  • 7. He laughs at the commotion in the town; he does not hear a driver's shout.
  • 8. He ranges the hills for his pasture and searches for any green thing.
  • 9. "Will the wild ox consent to serve you? Will he stay by your manger at night?
  • 10. Can you hold him to the furrow with a harness? Will he till the valleys behind you?
  • 11. Will you rely on him for his great strength? Will you leave your heavy work to him?
  • 12. Can you trust him to bring in your grain and gather it to your threshing floor?
  • 13. "The wings of the ostrich flap joyfully, but they cannot compare with the pinions and feathers of the stork.
  • 14. She lays her eggs on the ground and lets them warm in the sand,
  • 15. unmindful that a foot may crush them, that some wild animal may trample them.
  • 16. She treats her young harshly, as if they were not hers; she cares not that her labor was in vain,
  • 17. for God did not endow her with wisdom or give her a share of good sense.
  • 18. Yet when she spreads her feathers to run, she laughs at horse and rider.
  • 19. "Do you give the horse his strength or clothe his neck with a flowing mane?
  • 20. Do you make him leap like a locust, striking terror with his proud snorting?
  • 21. He paws fiercely, rejoicing in his strength, and charges into the fray.
  • 22. He laughs at fear, afraid of nothing; he does not shy away from the sword.
  • 23. The quiver rattles against his side, along with the flashing spear and lance.
  • 24. In frenzied excitement he eats up the ground; he cannot stand still when the trumpet sounds.
  • 25. At the blast of the trumpet he snorts, 'Aha!' He catches the scent of battle from afar, the shout of commanders and the battle cry.
  • 26. "Does the hawk take flight by your wisdom and spread his wings toward the south?
  • 27. Does the eagle soar at your command and build his nest on high?
  • 28. He dwells on a cliff and stays there at night; a rocky crag is his stronghold.
  • 29. From there he seeks out his food; his eyes detect it from afar.
  • 30. His young ones feast on blood, and where the slain are, there is he."
