Exodus 33

• 1. The LORD said to Moses, "Now that you have brought these people out of Egypt, lead them to the land I solemnly promised Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. I told them long ago that I would give this land to their descendants.
• 2. And I will send an angel before you to drive out the Canaanites, Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites.
• 3. Theirs is a land flowing with milk and honey. But I will not travel along with you, for you are a stubborn, unruly people. If I did, I would be tempted to destroy you along the way."
• 4. When the people heard these stern words, they went into mourning and refused to wear their jewelry and ornaments.
• 5. For the LORD had told Moses to tell them, "You are an unruly, stubborn people. If I were there among you for even a moment, I would destroy you. Remove your jewelry and ornaments until I decide what to do with you."
• 6. So from the time they left Mount Sinai, the Israelites wore no more jewelry.
• 7. It was Moses' custom to set up the tent known as the Tent of Meeting far outside the camp. Everyone who wanted to consult with the LORD would go there.
• 8. Whenever Moses went out to the Tent of Meeting, all the people would get up and stand in their tent entrances. They would all watch Moses until he disappeared inside.
• 9. As he went into the tent, the pillar of cloud would come down and hover at the entrance while the LORD spoke with Moses.
• 10. Then all the people would stand and bow low at their tent entrances.
• 11. Inside the Tent of Meeting, the LORD would speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. Afterward Moses would return to the camp, but the young man who assisted him, Joshua son of Nun, stayed behind in the Tent of Meeting.
• 12. Moses said to the LORD, "You have been telling me, `Take these people up to the Promised Land.' But you haven't told me whom you will send with me. You call me by name and tell me I have found favor with you.
• 13. Please, if this is really so, show me your intentions so I will understand you more fully and do exactly what you want me to do. Besides, don't forget that this nation is your very own people."
• 14. And the LORD replied, "I will personally go with you, Moses. I will give you rest--everything will be fine for you."
• 15. Then Moses said, "If you don't go with us personally, don't let us move a step from this place.
• 16. If you don't go with us, how will anyone ever know that your people and I have found favor with you? How else will they know we are special and distinct from all other people on the earth?"
• 17. And the LORD replied to Moses, "I will indeed do what you have asked, for you have found favor with me, and you are my friend."
• 18. Then Moses had one more request. "Please let me see your glorious presence," he said.
• 19. The LORD replied, "I will make all my goodness pass before you, and I will call out my name, `the LORD,' to you. I will show kindness to anyone I choose, and I will show mercy to anyone I choose.
• 20. But you may not look directly at my face, for no one may see me and live."
• 21. The LORD continued, "Stand here on this rock beside me.
• 22. As my glorious presence passes by, I will put you in the cleft of the rock and cover you with my hand until I have passed.
• 23. Then I will remove my hand, and you will see me from behind. But my face will not be seen."

John 13

• 1. Before the Passover celebration, Jesus knew that his hour had come to leave this world and return to his Father. He now showed the disciples the full extent of his love.
• 2. It was time for supper, and the Devil had already enticed Judas, son of Simon Iscariot, to carry out his plan to betray Jesus.
• 3. Jesus knew that the Father had given him authority over everything and that he had come from God and would return to God.
• 4. So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist,
• 5. and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with the towel he had around him.
• 6. When he came to Simon Peter, Peter said to him, "Lord, why are you going to wash my feet?"
• 7. Jesus replied, "You don't understand now why I am doing it; someday you will."
• 8. "No," Peter protested, "you will never wash my feet!" Jesus replied, "But if I don't wash you, you won't belong to me."
• 9. Simon Peter exclaimed, "Then wash my hands and head as well, Lord, not just my feet!"
• 10. Jesus replied, "A person who has bathed all over does not need to wash, except for the feet, to be entirely clean. And you are clean, but that isn't true of everyone here."
• 11. For Jesus knew who would betray him. That is what he meant when he said, "Not all of you are clean."
• 12. After washing their feet, he put on his robe again and sat down and asked, "Do you understand what I was doing?
• 13. You call me 'Teacher' and 'Lord,' and you are right, because it is true.
• 14. And since I, the Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other's feet.
• 15. I have given you an example to follow. Do as I have done to you.
• 16. How true it is that a servant is not greater than the master. Nor are messengers more important than the one who sends them.
• 17. You know these things--now do them! That is the path of blessing.
• 18. "I am not saying these things to all of you; I know so well each one of you I chose. The Scriptures declare, 'The one who shares my food has turned against me,' and this will soon come true.
• 19. I tell you this now, so that when it happens you will believe I am the Messiah.
• 20. Truly, anyone who welcomes my messenger is welcoming me, and anyone who welcomes me is welcoming the Father who sent me."
• 21. Now Jesus was in great anguish of spirit, and he exclaimed, "The truth is, one of you will betray me!"
• 22. The disciples looked at each other, wondering whom he could mean.
• 23. One of Jesus' disciples, the one Jesus loved, was sitting next to Jesus at the table.
• 24. Simon Peter motioned to him to ask who would do this terrible thing.
• 25. Leaning toward Jesus, he asked, "Lord, who is it?"
• 26. Jesus said, "It is the one to whom I give the bread dipped in the sauce." And when he had dipped it, he gave it to Judas, son of Simon Iscariot.
• 27. As soon as Judas had eaten the bread, Satan entered into him. Then Jesus told him, "Hurry. Do it now."
• 28. None of the others at the table knew what Jesus meant.
• 29. Since Judas was their treasurer, some thought Jesus was telling him to go and pay for the food or to give some money to the poor.
• 30. So Judas left at once, going out into the night.
• 31. As soon as Judas left the room, Jesus said, "The time has come for me, the Son of Man, to enter into my glory, and God will receive glory because of all that happens to me.
• 32. And God will bring me into my glory very soon.
• 33. Dear children, how brief are these moments before I must go away and leave you! Then, though you search for me, you cannot come to me--just as I told the Jewish leaders.
• 34. So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other.
• 35. Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples."
• 36. Simon Peter said, "Lord, where are you going?" And Jesus replied, "You can't go with me now, but you will follow me later."
• 37. "But why can't I come now, Lord?" he asked. "I am ready to die for you."
• 38. Jesus answered, "Die for me? No, before the rooster crows tomorrow morning, you will deny three times that you even know me.

Proverbs 10

• 1. The proverbs of Solomon: A wise child brings joy to a father; a foolish child brings grief to a mother.
• 2. Ill-gotten gain has no lasting value, but right living can save your life.
• 3. The LORD will not let the godly starve to death, but he refuses to satisfy the craving of the wicked.
• 4. Lazy people are soon poor; hard workers get rich.
• 5. A wise youth works hard all summer; a youth who sleeps away the hour of opportunity brings shame.
• 6. The godly are showered with blessings; evil people cover up their harmful intentions.
• 7. We all have happy memories of the godly, but the name of a wicked person rots away.
• 8. The wise are glad to be instructed, but babbling fools fall flat on their faces.
• 9. People with integrity have firm footing, but those who follow crooked paths will slip and fall.
• 10. People who wink at wrong cause trouble, but a bold reproof promotes peace.
• 11. The words of the godly lead to life; evil people cover up their harmful intentions.
• 12. Hatred stirs up quarrels, but love covers all offenses.
• 13. Wise words come from the lips of people with understanding, but fools will be punished with a rod.
• 14. Wise people treasure knowledge, but the babbling of a fool invites trouble.
• 15. The wealth of the rich is their fortress; the poverty of the poor is their calamity.
• 16. The earnings of the godly enhance their lives, but evil people squander their money on sin.
• 17. People who accept correction are on the pathway to life, but those who ignore it will lead others astray.
• 18. To hide hatred is to be a liar; to slander is to be a fool.
• 19. Don't talk too much, for it fosters sin. Be sensible and turn off the flow!
• 20. The words of the godly are like sterling silver; the heart of a fool is worthless.
• 21. The godly give good advice, but fools are destroyed by their lack of common sense.
• 22. The blessing of the LORD makes a person rich, and he adds no sorrow with it.
• 23. Doing wrong is fun for a fool, while wise conduct is a pleasure to the wise.
• 24. The fears of the wicked will all come true; so will the hopes of the godly.
• 25. Disaster strikes like a cyclone, whirling the wicked away, but the godly have a lasting foundation.
• 26. Lazy people are a pain to their employer. They are like smoke in the eyes or vinegar that sets the teeth on edge.
• 27. Fear of the LORD lengthens one's life, but the years of the wicked are cut short.
• 28. The hopes of the godly result in happiness, but the expectations of the wicked are all in vain.
• 29. The LORD protects the upright but destroys the wicked.
• 30. The godly will never be disturbed, but the wicked will be removed from the land.
• 31. The godly person gives wise advice, but the tongue that deceives will be cut off.
• 32. The godly speak words that are helpful, but the wicked speak only what is corrupt.
