Deuteronomy 10

• 1. "At that time the LORD said to me, `Prepare two stone tablets like the first ones, and make a sacred chest of wood to keep them in. Return to me on the mountain,
• 2. and I will write on the tablets the same words that were on the ones you smashed. Then place the tablets in the sacred chest--the Ark of the Covenant.'
• 3. "So I made a chest of acacia wood and cut two stone tablets like the first two, and I took the tablets up the mountain.
• 4. The LORD again wrote the terms of the covenant--the Ten Commandments--on them and gave them to me. They were the same words the LORD had spoken to you from the heart of the fire on the mountain as you were assembled below.
• 5. Then I came down and placed the tablets in the Ark of the Covenant, which I had made, just as the LORD commanded me. And the tablets are still there in the Ark.
• 6. "The people of Israel set out from the wells of the people of Jaakan and traveled to Moserah, where Aaron died and was buried. His son Eleazar became the high priest in his place.
• 7. Then they journeyed to Gudgodah, and from there to Jotbathah, a land with brooks of water.
• 8. At that time the LORD set apart the tribe of Levi to carry the Ark of the LORD's covenant, to minister before the LORD, and to pronounce blessings in his name. These are still their duties.
• 9. That is why the Levites have no share or inheritance reserved for them among the other Israelite tribes. The LORD himself is their inheritance, as the LORD your God told them.
• 10. "As I said before, I stayed on the mountain in the LORD's presence for forty days and nights, as I had done the first time. And once again the LORD yielded to my pleas and didn't destroy you.
• 11. But the LORD said to me, `Get up and lead the people into the land I swore to give their ancestors, so they may take possession of it.'
• 12. "And now, Israel, what does the LORD your God require of you? He requires you to fear him, to live according to his will, to love and worship him with all your heart and soul,
• 13. and to obey the LORD's commands and laws that I am giving you today for your own good.
• 14. The highest heavens and the earth and everything in it all belong to the LORD your God.
• 15. Yet the LORD chose your ancestors as the objects of his love. And he chose you, their descendants, above every other nation, as is evident today.
• 16. Therefore, cleanse your sinful hearts and stop being stubborn.
• 17. "The LORD your God is the God of gods and Lord of lords. He is the great God, mighty and awesome, who shows no partiality and takes no bribes.
• 18. He gives justice to orphans and widows. He shows love to the foreigners living among you and gives them food and clothing.
• 19. You, too, must show love to foreigners, for you yourselves were once foreigners in the land of Egypt.
• 20. You must fear the LORD your God and worship him and cling to him. Your oaths must be in his name alone.
• 21. He is your God, the one who is worthy of your praise, the one who has done mighty miracles that you yourselves have seen.
• 22. When your ancestors went down into Egypt, there were only seventy of them. But now the LORD your God has made you as numerous as the stars in the sky!

Psalms 94

• 1. O LORD, the God to whom vengeance belongs, O God of vengeance, let your glorious justice be seen!
• 2. Arise, O judge of the earth. Sentence the proud to the penalties they deserve.
• 3. How long, O LORD? How long will the wicked be allowed to gloat?
• 4. Hear their arrogance! How these evildoers boast!
• 5. They oppress your people, LORD, hurting those you love.
• 6. They kill widows and foreigners and murder orphans.
• 7. "The LORD isn't looking," they say, "and besides, the God of Israel doesn't care."
• 8. Think again, you fools! When will you finally catch on?
• 9. Is the one who made your ears deaf? Is the one who formed your eyes blind?
• 10. He punishes the nations--won't he also punish you? He knows everything--doesn't he also know what you are doing?
• 11. The LORD knows people's thoughts, that they are worthless!
• 12. Happy are those whom you discipline, LORD, and those whom you teach from your law.
• 13. You give them relief from troubled times until a pit is dug for the wicked.
• 14. The LORD will not reject his people; he will not abandon his own special possession.
• 15. Judgment will come again for the righteous, and those who are upright will have a reward.
• 16. Who will protect me from the wicked? Who will stand up for me against evildoers?
• 17. Unless the LORD had helped me, I would soon have died.
• 18. I cried out, "I'm slipping!" and your unfailing love, O LORD, supported me.
• 19. When doubts filled my mind, your comfort gave me renewed hope and cheer.
• 20. Can unjust leaders claim that God is on their side--leaders who permit injustice by their laws?
• 21. They attack the righteous and condemn the innocent to death.
• 22. But the LORD is my fortress; my God is a mighty rock where I can hide.
• 23. God will make the sins of evil people fall back upon them. He will destroy them for their sins. The LORD our God will destroy them.

Isaiah 38

• 1. About that time Hezekiah became deathly ill, and the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz went to visit him. He gave the king this message: "This is what the LORD says: Set your affairs in order, for you are going to die. You will not recover from this illness."
• 2. When Hezekiah heard this, he turned his face to the wall and prayed to the LORD,
• 3. "Remember, O LORD, how I have always tried to be faithful to you and do what is pleasing in your sight." Then he broke down and wept bitterly.
• 4. Then this message came to Isaiah from the LORD:
• 5. "Go back to Hezekiah and tell him, `This is what the LORD, the God of your ancestor David, says: I have heard your prayer and seen your tears. I will add fifteen years to your life,
• 6. and I will rescue you and this city from the king of Assyria. Yes, I will defend this city.
• 7. " `And this is the sign that the LORD will give you to prove he will do as he promised:
• 8. I will cause the sun's shadow to move ten steps backward on the sundial of Ahaz!'" So the shadow on the sundial moved backward ten steps.
• 9. When King Hezekiah was well again, he wrote this poem about his experience:
• 10. I said, "In the prime of my life, must I now enter the place of the dead? Am I to be robbed of my normal years?"
• 11. I said, "Never again will I see the LORD GOD while still in the land of the living. Never again will I see my friends or laugh with those who live in this world.
• 12. My life has been blown away like a shepherd's tent in a storm. It has been cut short, as when a weaver cuts cloth from a loom. Suddenly, my life was over.
• 13. I waited patiently all night, but I was torn apart as though by lions. Suddenly, my life was over.
• 14. Delirious, I chattered like a swallow or a crane, and then I moaned like a mourning dove. My eyes grew tired of looking to heaven for help. I am in trouble, Lord. Help me!"
• 15. But what could I say? For he himself had sent this sickness. Now I will walk humbly throughout my years because of this anguish I have felt.
• 16. Lord, your discipline is good, for it leads to life and health. You have restored my health and have allowed me to live!
• 17. Yes, it was good for me to suffer this anguish, for you have rescued me from death and have forgiven all my sins.
• 18. For the dead cannot praise you; they cannot raise their voices in praise. Those who go down to destruction can no longer hope in your faithfulness.
• 19. Only the living can praise you as I do today. Each generation can make known your faithfulness to the next.
• 20. Think of it--the LORD has healed me! I will sing his praises with instruments every day of my life in the Temple of the LORD.
• 21. Isaiah had said to Hezekiah's servants, "Make an ointment from figs and spread it over the boil, and Hezekiah will recover."
• 22. And Hezekiah had asked, "What sign will prove that I will go to the Temple of the LORD three days from now?"
