Deuteronomy 3

• 1. "Next we headed for the land of Bashan, where King Og and his army attacked us at Edrei.
• 2. But the LORD told me, `Do not be afraid of him, for I have given you victory over Og and his army, giving you his entire land. Treat him just as you treated King Sihon of the Amorites, who ruled in Heshbon.'
• 3. So the LORD our God handed King Og and all his people over to us, and we killed them all.
• 4. We conquered all sixty of his towns, the entire Argob region in his kingdom of Bashan.
• 5. These were all fortified cities with high walls and barred gates. We also took many unwalled villages at the same time.
• 6. We completely destroyed the kingdom of Bashan, just as we had destroyed King Sihon of Heshbon. We destroyed all the people in every town we conquered--men, women, and children alike.
• 7. But we kept all the livestock for ourselves and took plunder from all the towns.
• 8. "We now possessed all the land of the two Amorite kings east of the Jordan River--from the Arnon Gorge to Mount Hermon.
• 9. (Mount Hermon is called Sirion by the Sidonians; the Amorites call it Senir.)
• 10. We had now conquered all the cities on the plateau, and all Gilead and Bashan as far as the towns of Salecah and Edrei, which were part of Og's kingdom in Bashan.
• 11. (Incidentally, King Og of Bashan was the last of the giant Rephaites. His iron bed was more than thirteen feet long and six feet wide. It can still be seen in the Ammonite city of Rabbah.)
• 12. "When we took possession of this land, I gave the territory beyond Aroer along the Arnon Gorge, plus half of the hill country of Gilead with its towns, to the tribes of Reuben and Gad.
• 13. Then I gave the rest of Gilead and all of Bashan--Og's former kingdom--to the half-tribe of Manasseh. (The Argob region of Bashan used to be known as the land of the Rephaites.
• 14. Jair, a leader from the tribe of Manasseh, acquired the whole Argob region in Bashan all the way to the borders of the Geshurites and Maacathites. Jair renamed this region after himself, calling it the Towns of Jair, as it is still known today.)
• 15. I gave Gilead to the clan of Makir.
• 16. And to the tribes of Reuben and Gad I gave the area extending from Gilead to the middle of the Arnon Gorge, all the way to the Jabbok River on the Ammonite frontier.
• 17. They also received the Jordan Valley, including the Jordan River and its eastern banks, all the way from the Sea of Galilee down to the Dead Sea, with the slopes of Pisgah on the east.
• 18. "At that time I gave this command to the tribes that will live east of the Jordan: `Although the LORD your God has given you this land as your property, all your fighting men must cross the Jordan, armed and ready to protect your Israelite relatives.
• 19. Your wives, children, and numerous livestock, however, may stay behind in the towns I have given you.
• 20. When the LORD has given security to the rest of the Israelites, as he has to you, and when they occupy the land the LORD your God is giving them across the Jordan River, then you may return here to the land I have given you.'
• 21. "At that time I said to Joshua, `You have seen all that the LORD your God has done to these two kings. He will do the same to all the kingdoms on the west side of the Jordan.
• 22. Do not be afraid of the nations there, for the LORD your God will fight for you.'
• 23. "At that time I pleaded with the LORD and said,
• 24. `O Sovereign LORD, I am your servant. You have only begun to show me your greatness and power. Is there any god in heaven or on earth who can perform such great deeds as yours?
• 25. Please let me cross the Jordan to see the wonderful land on the other side, the beautiful hill country and the Lebanon mountains.'
• 26. "But the LORD was angry with me because of you, and he would not listen to me. `That's enough!' he ordered. `Speak of it no more.
• 27. You can go to Pisgah Peak and view the land in every direction, but you may not cross the Jordan River.
• 28. But commission Joshua and encourage him, for he will lead the people across the Jordan. He will give them the land you now see before you.'
• 29. So we stayed in the valley near Beth-peor.

Psalms 85

• 1. LORD, you have poured out amazing blessings on your land! You have restored the fortunes of Israel.
• 2. You have forgiven the guilt of your people--yes, you have covered all their sins.
• 3. You have withdrawn your fury. You have ended your blazing anger.
• 4. Now turn to us again, O God of our salvation. Put aside your anger against us.
• 5. Will you be angry with us always? Will you prolong your wrath to distant generations?
• 6. Won't you revive us again, so your people can rejoice in you?
• 7. Show us your unfailing love, O LORD, and grant us your salvation.
• 8. I listen carefully to what God the LORD is saying, for he speaks peace to his people, his faithful ones. But let them not return to their foolish ways.
• 9. Surely his salvation is near to those who honor him; our land will be filled with his glory.
• 10. Unfailing love and truth have met together. Righteousness and peace have kissed!
• 11. Truth springs up from the earth, and righteousness smiles down from heaven.
• 12. Yes, the LORD pours down his blessings. Our land will yield its bountiful crops.
• 13. Righteousness goes as a herald before him, preparing the way for his steps.

Psalms 86

• 1. Bend down, O LORD, and hear my prayer; answer me, for I need your help.
• 2. Protect me, for I am devoted to you. Save me, for I serve you and trust you. You are my God.
• 3. Be merciful, O Lord, for I am calling on you constantly.
• 4. Give me happiness, O Lord, for my life depends on you.
• 5. O Lord, you are so good, so ready to forgive, so full of unfailing love for all who ask your aid.
• 6. Listen closely to my prayer, O LORD; hear my urgent cry.
• 7. I will call to you whenever trouble strikes, and you will answer me.
• 8. Nowhere among the pagan gods is there a god like you, O Lord. There are no other miracles like yours.
• 9. All the nations--and you made each one--will come and bow before you, Lord; they will praise your great and holy name.
• 10. For you are great and perform great miracles. You alone are God.
• 11. Teach me your ways, O LORD, that I may live according to your truth! Grant me purity of heart, that I may honor you.
• 12. With all my heart I will praise you, O Lord my God. I will give glory to your name forever,
• 13. for your love for me is very great. You have rescued me from the depths of death!
• 14. O God, insolent people rise up against me; violent people are trying to kill me. And you mean nothing to them.
• 15. But you, O Lord, are a merciful and gracious God, slow to get angry, full of unfailing love and truth.
• 16. Look down and have mercy on me. Give strength to your servant; yes, save me, for I am your servant.
• 17. Send me a sign of your favor. Then those who hate me will be put to shame, for you, O LORD, help and comfort me.

Isaiah 31

• 1. Destruction is certain for those who look to Egypt for help, trusting their cavalry and chariots instead of looking to the LORD, the Holy One of Israel.
• 2. In his wisdom, the LORD will send great disaster; he will not change his mind. He will rise against those who are wicked, and he will crush their allies, too.
• 3. For these Egyptians are mere humans, not God! Their horses are puny flesh, not mighty spirits! When the LORD clenches his fist against them, they will stumble and fall among those they are trying to help. They will all fall down and die together.
• 4. But the LORD has told me this: "When a lion, even a young one, kills a sheep, it pays no attention to the shepherd's shouts and noise. It just goes right on eating. In the same way, the LORD Almighty will come and fight on Mount Zion. He will not be frightened away!
• 5. The LORD Almighty will hover over Jerusalem as a bird hovers around its nest. He will defend and save the city; he will pass over it and rescue it."
• 6. Therefore, my people, though you are such wicked rebels, come and return to the LORD.
• 7. I know the glorious day will come when every one of you will throw away the gold idols and silver images that your sinful hands have made.
• 8. "The Assyrians will be destroyed, but not by the swords of men. The sword of God will strike them, and they will panic and flee. The strong young Assyrians will be taken away as captives.
• 9. Even their generals will quake with terror and flee when they see the battle flags," says the LORD, whose flame burns brightly in Jerusalem.
