Thus saith the LORD, The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool: where is the house that ye build unto me? and where is the place of my rest? For all those things hath mine hand made, and all those things have been, saith the LORD: but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word. [Isaiah 66: 1-2]

    Exodus 13

  • 1. The LORD said to Moses,
  • 2. "Consecrate to me every firstborn male. The first offspring of every womb among the Israelites belongs to me, whether man or animal."
  • 3. Then Moses said to the people, "Commemorate this day, the day you came out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery, because the LORD brought you out of it with a mighty hand. Eat nothing containing yeast.
  • 4. Today, in the month of Abib, you are leaving.
  • 5. When the LORD brings you into the land of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Hivites and Jebusites-the land he swore to your forefathers to give you, a land flowing with milk and honey-you are to observe this ceremony in this month:
  • 6. For seven days eat bread made without yeast and on the seventh day hold a festival to the LORD.
  • 7. Eat unleavened bread during those seven days; nothing with yeast in it is to be seen among you, nor shall any yeast be seen anywhere within your borders.
  • 8. On that day tell your son, 'I do this because of what the LORD did for me when I came out of Egypt.'
  • 9. This observance will be for you like a sign on your hand and a reminder on your forehead that the law of the LORD is to be on your lips. For the LORD brought you out of Egypt with his mighty hand.
  • 10. You must keep this ordinance at the appointed time year after year.
  • 11. "After the LORD brings you into the land of the Canaanites and gives it to you, as he promised on oath to you and your forefathers,
  • 12. you are to give over to the LORD the first offspring of every womb. All the firstborn males of your livestock belong to the LORD.
  • 13. Redeem with a lamb every firstborn donkey, but if you do not redeem it, break its neck. Redeem every firstborn among your sons.
  • 14. "In days to come, when your son asks you, 'What does this mean?' say to him, 'With a mighty hand the LORD brought us out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.
  • 15. When Pharaoh stubbornly refused to let us go, the LORD killed every firstborn in Egypt, both man and animal. This is why I sacrifice to the LORD the first male offspring of every womb and redeem each of my firstborn sons.'
  • 16. And it will be like a sign on your hand and a symbol on your forehead that the LORD brought us out of Egypt with his mighty hand."
  • 17. When Pharaoh let the people go, God did not lead them on the road through the Philistine country, though that was shorter. For God said, "If they face war, they might change their minds and return to Egypt."
  • 18. So God led the people around by the desert road toward the Red Sea. The Israelites went up out of Egypt armed for battle.
  • 19. Moses took the bones of Joseph with him because Joseph had made the sons of Israel swear an oath. He had said, "God will surely come to your aid, and then you must carry my bones up with you from this place."
  • 20. After leaving Succoth they camped at Etham on the edge of the desert.
  • 21. By day the LORD went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud to guide them on their way and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they could travel by day or night.
  • 22. Neither the pillar of cloud by day nor the pillar of fire by night left its place in front of the people.
  • Luke 17

  • 1. Jesus said to his disciples: "Things that cause people to sin are bound to come, but woe to that person through whom they come.
  • 2. It would be better for him to be thrown into the sea with a millstone tied around his neck than for him to cause one of these little ones to sin.
  • 3. So watch yourselves. "If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him.
  • 4. If he sins against you seven times in a day, and seven times comes back to you and says, 'I repent,' forgive him."
  • 5. The apostles said to the Lord, "Increase our faith!"
  • 6. He replied, "If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, 'Be uprooted and planted in the sea,' and it will obey you.
  • 7. "Suppose one of you had a servant plowing or looking after the sheep. Would he say to the servant when he comes in from the field, 'Come along now and sit down to eat'?
  • 8. Would he not rather say, 'Prepare my supper, get yourself ready and wait on me while I eat and drink; after that you may eat and drink'?
  • 9. Would he thank the servant because he did what he was told to do?
  • 10. So you also, when you have done everything you were told to do, should say, 'We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty.'"
  • 11. Now on his way to Jerusalem, Jesus traveled along the border between Samaria and Galilee.
  • 12. As he was going into a village, ten men who had leprosy met him. They stood at a distance
  • 13. and called out in a loud voice, "Jesus, Master, have pity on us!"
  • 14. When he saw them, he said, "Go, show yourselves to the priests." And as they went, they were cleansed.
  • 15. One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice.
  • 16. He threw himself at Jesus' feet and thanked him--and he was a Samaritan.
  • 17. Jesus asked, "Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine?
  • 18. Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?"
  • 19. Then he said to him, "Rise and go; your faith has made you well."
  • 20. Once, having been asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, Jesus replied, "The kingdom of God does not come with your careful observation,
  • 21. nor will people say, 'Here it is,' or 'There it is,' because the kingdom of God is within you."
  • 22. Then he said to his disciples, "The time is coming when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, but you will not see it.
  • 23. Men will tell you, 'There he is!' or 'Here he is!' Do not go running off after them.
  • 24. For the Son of Man in his day will be like the lightning, which flashes and lights up the sky from one end to the other.
  • 25. But first he must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation.
  • 26. "Just as it was in the days of Noah, so also will it be in the days of the Son of Man.
  • 27. People were eating, drinking, marrying and being given in marriage up to the day Noah entered the ark. Then the flood came and destroyed them all.
  • 28. "It was the same in the days of Lot. People were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building.
  • 29. But the day Lot left Sodom, fire and sulfur rained down from heaven and destroyed them all.
  • 30. "It will be just like this on the day the Son of Man is revealed.
  • 31. On that day no one who is on the roof of his house, with his goods inside, should go down to get them. Likewise, no one in the field should go back for anything.
  • 32. Remember Lot's wife!
  • 33. Whoever tries to keep his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life will preserve it.
  • 34. I tell you, on that night two people will be in one bed; one will be taken and the other left.
  • 35. Two women will be grinding grain together; one will be taken and the other left."
  • 36. See Footnote
  • 37. "Where, Lord?" they asked. He replied, "Where there is a dead body, there the vultures will gather."
  • Job 32

  • 1. So these three men stopped answering Job, because he was righteous in his own eyes.
  • 2. But Elihu son of Barakel the Buzite, of the family of Ram, became very angry with Job for justifying himself rather than God.
  • 3. He was also angry with the three friends, because they had found no way to refute Job, and yet had condemned him.
  • 4. Now Elihu had waited before speaking to Job because they were older than he.
  • 5. But when he saw that the three men had nothing more to say, his anger was aroused.
  • 6. So Elihu son of Barakel the Buzite said: "I am young in years, and you are old; that is why I was fearful, not daring to tell you what I know.
  • 7. I thought, 'Age should speak; advanced years should teach wisdom.'
  • 8. But it is the spirit in a man, the breath of the Almighty, that gives him understanding.
  • 9. It is not only the old who are wise, not only the aged who understand what is right.
  • 10. "Therefore I say: Listen to me; I too will tell you what I know.
  • 11. I waited while you spoke, I listened to your reasoning; while you were searching for words,
  • 12. I gave you my full attention. But not one of you has proved Job wrong; none of you has answered his arguments.
  • 13. Do not say, 'We have found wisdom; let God refute him, not man.'
  • 14. But Job has not marshaled his words against me, and I will not answer him with your arguments.
  • 15. "They are dismayed and have no more to say; words have failed them.
  • 16. Must I wait, now that they are silent, now that they stand there with no reply?
  • 17. I too will have my say; I too will tell what I know.
  • 18. For I am full of words, and the spirit within me compels me;
  • 19. inside I am like bottled-up wine, like new wineskins ready to burst.
  • 20. I must speak and find relief; I must open my lips and reply.
  • 21. I will show partiality to no one, nor will I flatter any man;
  • 22. for if I were skilled in flattery, my Maker would soon take me away.
