Genesis 12

• 1. The LORD had said to Abram, "Leave your country, your people and your father's household and go to the land I will show you.
• 2. "I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing.
• 3. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you."
• 4. So Abram left, as the LORD had told him; and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he set out from Haran.
• 5. He took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, all the possessions they had accumulated and the people they had acquired in Haran, and they set out for the land of Canaan, and they arrived there.
• 6. Abram traveled through the land as far as the site of the great tree of Moreh at Shechem. At that time the Canaanites were in the land.
• 7. The LORD appeared to Abram and said, "To your offspring I will give this land." So he built an altar there to the LORD, who had appeared to him.
• 8. From there he went on toward the hills east of Bethel and pitched his tent, with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east. There he built an altar to the LORD and called on the name of the LORD.
• 9. Then Abram set out and continued toward the Negev.
• 10. Now there was a famine in the land, and Abram went down to Egypt to live there for a while because the famine was severe.
• 11. As he was about to enter Egypt, he said to his wife Sarai, "I know what a beautiful woman you are.
• 12. When the Egyptians see you, they will say, 'This is his wife.' Then they will kill me but will let you live.
• 13. Say you are my sister, so that I will be treated well for your sake and my life will be spared because of you."
• 14. When Abram came to Egypt, the Egyptians saw that she was a very beautiful woman.
• 15. And when Pharaoh's officials saw her, they praised her to Pharaoh, and she was taken into his palace.
• 16. He treated Abram well for her sake, and Abram acquired sheep and cattle, male and female donkeys, menservants and maidservants, and camels.
• 17. But the LORD inflicted serious diseases on Pharaoh and his household because of Abram's wife Sarai.
• 18. So Pharaoh summoned Abram. "What have you done to me?" he said. "Why didn't you tell me she was your wife?
• 19. Why did you say, 'She is my sister,' so that I took her to be my wife? Now then, here is your wife. Take her and go!"
• 20. Then Pharaoh gave orders about Abram to his men, and they sent him on his way, with his wife and everything he had.

Matthew 11

• 1. After Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples, he went on from there to teach and preach in the towns of Galilee.
• 2. When John heard in prison what Christ was doing, he sent his disciples
• 3. to ask him, "Are you the one who was to come, or should we expect someone else?"
• 4. Jesus replied, "Go back and report to John what you hear and see:
• 5. The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor.
• 6. Blessed is the man who does not fall away on account of me."
• 7. As John's disciples were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: "What did you go out into the desert to see? A reed swayed by the wind?
• 8. If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear fine clothes are in kings' palaces.
• 9. Then what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.
• 10. This is the one about whom it is written: "'I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.'
• 11. I tell you the truth: Among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
• 12. From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been forcefully advancing, and forceful men lay hold of it.
• 13. For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John.
• 14. And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who was to come.
• 15. He who has ears, let him hear.
• 16. "To what can I compare this generation? They are like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling out to others:
• 17. "'We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge and you did not mourn.'
• 18. For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, 'He has a demon.'
• 19. The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, 'Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and "sinners."' But wisdom is proved right by her actions."
• 20. Then Jesus began to denounce the cities in which most of his miracles had been performed, because they did not repent.
• 21. "Woe to you, Korazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! If the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.
• 22. But I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you.
• 23. And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted up to the skies? No, you will go down to the depths. If the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would have remained to this day.
• 24. But I tell you that it will be more bearable for Sodom on the day of judgment than for you."
• 25. At that time Jesus said, "I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.
• 26. Yes, Father, for this was your good pleasure.
• 27. "All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.
• 28. "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.
• 29. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
• 30. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."

Nehemiah 1

• 1. The words of Nehemiah son of Hacaliah: In the month of Kislev in the twentieth year, while I was in the citadel of Susa,
• 2. Hanani, one of my brothers, came from Judah with some other men, and I questioned them about the Jewish remnant that survived the exile, and also about Jerusalem.
• 3. They said to me, "Those who survived the exile and are back in the province are in great trouble and disgrace. The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates have been burned with fire."
• 4. When I heard these things, I sat down and wept. For some days I mourned and fasted and prayed before the God of heaven.
• 5. Then I said: "O LORD, God of heaven, the great and awesome God, who keeps his covenant of love with those who love him and obey his commands,
• 6. let your ear be attentive and your eyes open to hear the prayer your servant is praying before you day and night for your servants, the people of Israel. I confess the sins we Israelites, including myself and my father's house, have committed against you.
• 7. We have acted very wickedly toward you. We have not obeyed the commands, decrees and laws you gave your servant Moses.
• 8. "Remember the instruction you gave your servant Moses, saying, 'If you are unfaithful, I will scatter you among the nations,
• 9. but if you return to me and obey my commands, then even if your exiled people are at the farthest horizon, I will gather them from there and bring them to the place I have chosen as a dwelling for my Name.'
• 10. "They are your servants and your people, whom you redeemed by your great strength and your mighty hand.
• 11. O Lord, let your ear be attentive to the prayer of this your servant and to the prayer of your servants who delight in revering your name. Give your servant success today by granting him favor in the presence of this man." I was cupbearer to the king.
